cutting down trees

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don't snow here
It stays pretty green

We picked out a tree at the grocery store. Piles of roped-up pines heaped the parking lot like kidnapped bodies. "No bikes or skateboards on the sidewalk" said the sign. Did that include Douglas firs? The unsmiling woman at the check-out counter wore a sweater festooned with holiday buttons (despite the glaring 80 degree temp). We strapped it on top of the car, hunting-trophy style. My hands still smell like sap.
