6 weird habits/things
1. I draw stars on every piece of furniture in my room. I carved them in my old closet, along with my name, before we moved to Miami.
2. My female betta fish is named Stella (after an Interpol song). She is two years old, pale pink and stubby-tailed (though her cheeks puff like a boy's when she's upset). I swear that she knows her own name because she always comes when I call. We like to watch TV together (Stella likes music videos, of course).
3. I miss horseback riding in my true home, Vermont. But I never got along with the girls who hung out at the stable--the ones with the French braids and designer jeans. They made fun of me because I didn't have my own pony. I got along better with their boyfriends--the lanky guys who raced lawn mowers on Field Day.
4. I used to have a fear of brushing my teeth. I thought that I could catch a disease from the dirty bristles. Thankfully I'm over it.
5. Because of my number obsession, I can tell the time signature of every moving thing on the planet...from the cars passing on US1 to my teacher's high-heeled footsteps.
6. I had an out-of-body experience when I was very little (I don't remember the age. I can only picture the castles on my wallpaper). I was lying on my bed and staring at the lamp on the ceiling. Suddenly I could see so much---the wires, the dust, the crumpled moths and dead flies withering in its folds. "I didn't know it was so dirty," I remember thinking. That's when I tilted and spotted my body, tucked into bed. I felt as if I were swimming in mid-air. Slowly I floated down the hall. To my left was a people-shaped figure, completely made of light. It was like staring into the sun without burning my eyes. I asked it to take me back. And it did.
